La Torrecilla is the highest peak in the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range with a height of 1,919 metres (6,295 ft) and lies west of Málaga and south east of Ronda in El Parque Natural de la Sierra de las Nieves in the Andalucía region of Spain. We joined our friends Nuria, Monica, Carlos, and Antonio for an unforgettable 12 mile, 8 hour roundtrip adventure to summit La Torrecilla in late December.
The Sierra de las Nieves is named after the snow that sometimes covers its heights in the winter and that used to be gathered in ice pits for regional use for refrigeration throughout the year. In the 16th and 17th centuries, los neveros would manage deep well-like pits roofed with the native pinsapo pine branches to store winter snows and convert into ice blocks to sell. In summer, these would be carried by donkey to the town of Yunquera for distribution – always traveling by night – to Ronda, Málaga, Olvera, Seville and elsewhere.
The 360 degree views from La Torrecilla were extraordinary. We could clearly see the Atlas and Rif Mountains of Morocco, the Straight of Gibraltar, Cadiz, and over to Granada and the Sierra Nevadas mountain range.

Another highlight were the centuries old Quejigo tree, Quercus faginea, the Portuguese oak or Valencian oak, a species of oak native to the western Mediterranean region in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and in the Atlas Mountains of northwest Africa. The Quejigos of Sierra de las Nieves live at treeline just below the alpine zone and are gnarled and twisted from winds and storms. They are reminiscent of the "Ents" in Lord of the Rings.
The Quejigo acorns, like those of the cork oak, are an important food for free-range black Iberian pigs reared for jamón Ibérico production.
La Torrecilla es el pico más alto de la Sierra de las Nieves con una altura de 1.919 metros (6.295 pies) y se encuentra al oeste de Málaga y al sureste de Ronda en El Parque Natural de la Sierra de las Nieves en la región de Andalucía de España. Nos unimos a nuestros amigos Nuria, Monica, Carlos y Antonio para una aventura inolvidable de ida y vuelta de 12 millas y 8 horas hasta la cumbre de La Torrecilla a fines de diciembre.
La Sierra de las Nieves lleva su nombre por la nieve que a veces cubre sus alturas en el invierno y que solía reunirse en pozos de hielo para uso regional para la refrigeración durante todo el año. En los siglos XVI y XVII, los neveros manejaron pozos profundos y bien techados con ramas nativas de pinsapos para almacenar las nieves invernales y convertirlas en bloques de hielo para vender. En verano, estos serían transportados en burro a la ciudad de Yunquera para su distribución, siempre viajando de noche, a Ronda, Málaga, Olvera, Sevilla y otros lugares.
Las vistas de 360 rados desde La Torrecilla fueron extraordinarias. Pudimos ver claramente las montañas Atlas y Rif de Marruecos, el Estrecho de Gibralter, Cádiz, y hacia Granada y la cordillera de la Sierra Nevadas.
Otro destaque fue el árbol quejigo centenario, Quercus faginea, el roble portugués o el roble valenciano, una especie de roble nativo de la región mediterránea occidental en la Península Ibérica y las Islas Baleares, y en las montañas del Atlas del noroeste de África. Los Quejigos de la Sierra de las Nieves viven en el límite justo debajo de la zona alpina y están retorcidos por los vientos y las tormentas. Son una reminiscencia de los "Ents" en la película El Señor de los Anillos.
Las bellotas del Quejigo, al igual que las del alcornoque, son un alimento importante para los cerdos ibéricos negros criados para la producción del jamón ibérico.
The snow-capped peaks on the distant horizon are the Sierra Nevadas, which are located next to Granada and home to our local ski basin!
